Passive Microwave Radiometers & Climate Monitoring: A Study
نویسنده
چکیده
A brief overview of the role of passive microwave radiometer in climate monitoring is given in this paper. Passive microwave radiometers have been an important part of the emerging field of climate applications of satellite data. Even though the researchers in passive microwave remote sensing are less as compared to visible and infrared remote sensing, the characteristics of microwave radiometers lend themselves more readily to climate applications. I will review some of the important advances this area has seen in the last thirty years, and what the future holds. Some of the applications reviewed are TRMM, applications to land surface parameter retrieval and the effects of weather systems on seaice concentration.

Sea surface temperature observation through clouds
Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important parameter used in many applications, such as fisheries, weather forecasting as boundary condition, and monitoring of climate changes. In these applications, SST is necessary under both fine and cloudy conditions, which can be made by passive microwave radiometers in particular under cloudy condition. To measure SST by microwave radiometers, frequenc...

متن کاملA Verification Study over Europe of Amsu-a/mhs and Ssmis Passive Microwave Precipitation Retrievals
Global monitoring of the precipitation requires the full exploitation of all overpasses of present and future satellites carrying cross-track and conically scanning passive microwave (PMW) radiometers. Therefore, it is essential to achieve consistency and accuracy of passive microwave precipitation retrievals from the different sensors orbiting around the globe. Within the EUMETSAT H-SAF progra...
متن کاملTGRS-2006-00626 An Ocean Surface Wind Vector Model Function for a Spaceborne Microwave Radiometer
Surface wind vector measurements over the oceans are vital for scientists and forecasters to understand the Earth's global weather and climate. In the last two decades operational measurements of global ocean wind speeds were obtained from passive microwave radiometers (SSM/I’s); and over this period, full ocean surface wind vector data were obtained from several NASA and ESA scatterometry miss...
متن کاملFusion of Active and Passive Microwave Observations to Create an Essential Climate Variable Data Record on Soil Moisture
Soil moisture was recently included in the list of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) that are deemed essential for IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) needs and considered feasible for global observation. ECVs data records should be as long, complete and consistent as possible, and in the case of soil moisture this...
